Updates!

YAY! I started filming... last Friday, Feb 22nd! Unfortunately, my first artist was incredibly late - so we had to smash some footage before I had to run off to work... on the bright side, I let her know about Creative Arts Day & she is going to work in the studio during it & we will film after I get done giving tours that day! 2 birds with one stone - the Art Dept has people in it & I can get footage of her working. We were going to try to film at her house, which is 45 mins away... we both decided it best to film on campus, that way we can show her beautiful artwork that happens to all be located at UC on her shelf!

So here's a blue note - literally blue. I videotaped Brandi as well this week & unfortunately the video camera I borrowed from the Library was not color calibrated correctly and everything was BLUE. I figured it was just the screen. NOPE! I was very wrong. So I have to go see Andy, to see if I can fix the footage or if we need to retape :/

I AM very excited about the time-lapse video I took of Brandi (while she was painting a portrait- of ME!) it's incredible... it took two days for the painting.. and I think she is doing some finishing touches next week - I've got about 1 minute 10 seconds of time lapsed painting! it's SO COOOL!!!! I need to obviously merge the videos & include a front text for the film. but it's almost done! yay!

So, I had an idea to incorporate the making of the Senior Art Show flyer into a promo video for the show. I asked to have the artists save the work in incriments so it can 'build'. I got some news that it did not get saved - however, I have got conflicting news. So, I have to figure this all out.

I'm also still trying to rangle the last two artists for filming - while still trying to get an interesting angle for the VCD majors... they have a more advertising outlook on their work - very different than Mary Kay & Brandi's Advocacy Art

Time lapse video

I found an absolutely fabulous article on how to make a time lapse video.. it has all the steps, equipment, and things you didn't think of that will mess you up. wonderful.. I think the best bet (since I don't have a dslr camera) and I do not own a time controller device is to download the time lapse app for the iphone/ipod/ipad (now only $1.99!) what a steal! haha.

I will talk to Diane tomorrow about borrowing her Ipad and downloading the app... very excited for the time lapse vid!

I also enjoyed how they incorporated time lapse photo stills along with with actual video of them painting... I was thinking this would be cool if we had a few segments of Brandi's paint pallet and her brush strokes

Meetings Galore

Marketing:
-will set up a webpage off of the UC website specifically for the senior art students
-the QR code will be directed specifically to the vimeo or youtube video located on the website (hopefully the video will appear fullscreen in the mobile mode)
-We can utilize 'Tony' to generage a qr code - hopefully we can either customize an image in the code or have the qr code within the medium of the artists choice. (this will be explored once video footage is taken care of)

things to think about:
-artist sketches, footage while working on piece, can walk around and get multiple angle
-1-2 minutes in length , remember to tape in quiet room (well lit, no fans, etc.) possibly

-placement of QR codes underneath artist statements in gallery
-creating a playful 'station' to download code scanner & also incorporating qr codes on promotion material for the senior show

I need to do some test footage on the flip cam or cam from library (I'm getting anxious because I do not know what quality would be best)

Artists:
-I've set up 2/4 dates to start filming artists
-I finally tracked down the last artist & got her contact info to call her and set up a day
-Brandi and I will video tape the time lapse video Friday after her 'interview' video ( VERY EXCITED) placement is key.

-working with the artists to structure a video that is relevant is incredibly tricky. especially for the vcd majors. I ran into Heather and we discussed her work.. I will need to further investigate a more 'advertising angle' for her video.. I have all of these very large ideas- however timing and the ability to actually construct something so extensive is what I'm lacking in.

Bare Bones Timeline

Andy is available 8:30-5 with a day or two in notice

Working out a time to be the model in Brandi's portrait and also utilize this for her timelapse! excited!

I am visualizing a 'documentary style' video clip, on angle, more relaxed, with areas of voice over.. I will need lots of footage... editing is key!
I watched this documentary on Alice Neel in my Women in Arts class.. it actually caught the classes attention due to the way it was filmed & the content being so... off the wall.
I think it's important to make this interesting, I'm sure we will get good stuff once we get the artists talking - positive things of course - but interesting.

Also, it was suggested to me that we could also utilize a projector in the front hall prior to people walking in.. pondering this over..

CMA Gallery One Experience

I am SO utterly impressed with the CMA's Gallery One. Holy Moly! It's fantastic! I was like a little kid in a candy shop... and there were actually little kids experiencing this too!!

Needless to say, I am most definitely trying to get a good creative edge for the Wasmer Gallery... especially after seeing what just came out at the CMA.

I spoke with Diane, the most important aspect of this project is to put the artists & the Gallery in a positive light. I had so much enthusiasm for my experience at the Gallery One .. I need to make people just as excited & interested in attending the Senior Art Show!

I think utilizing social media will really help.. showing the artists (who they are, what they are making & thinking [I know first hand, that until I read the little plack next to an art piece or read about it in a book I may be a little lost as to the message artists are trying to get across] and the process of them actually DOING it)

I was thinking of making the artists & the viewers connected somehow..

Picasso's La Vie was shown at the CMA as well, it was very interesting to see his sketches & know the back story of his work. They also did an x-ray of one of his pieces and found that it was something entirely different than the finished product..

CMA Gallery One!

Interactive screen explaing the Mythology is the Symbolism - We were able to not only SEE the mythology in art but CONSTRUCT a mythological comic


This was REALLY cool!! it explored the different ideas of 'the lion' in various artworks, even polled the viewers to see their impressions of the art "fierce, playful, powerful- relating to the lion pieces
The Lion pieces were located directly behind the monitor!!'


Allowing the user to learn and create their own mythological story!!!!




This was cool, as I walked around the rest of the museum I was able to listen to videos and learn a little extra about certain art pieces- you are able to RENT iPads to take out!


Needless to say, I played for an hour alone in Gallery One, This had me posture myself like the statues to see what it was like, then gave a brief description of the artwork
Another amazing feature, you were able to 'make a ceramic pot'.. all the steps! (minus the kiln)

They had a large screen set up, giving very detailed info on the artworks located behind the touch screen. VERY VERY COOl. all of the artists were Cleveland based! there were 6 interesting tabs on each artwork - location of the work, who made it, why, how did they construct it, where was it before the museum, other interesting tid bits!!! (learned alot!!)


This was part of an earlier picture above, This monitor detailed 3 different stories - Perseus, Bacchus, and Adam & Eve... showed these through art works and even film!

She has wisdom in her words!

What I think is truly incredible.. is that I vividly remember Diane telling me in Design Foundations how important it is to not be in a 'bubble'. That we are all doing things (artwork, ideas) that others are also doing/ thinking / feeling. Artists need to realize that we are all interconnected & to branch out & see what else is being done so that we can grow, etc.
Morale of the story, After pondering the question- what is interactive - I googled interactive art.

yup.. flabbergasted! Who know.. interactive art has been around for decades. I guess I just popped my interactive bubble.. slowly but surely...

Other Info

I spoke with Andy about the pros/cons of using iMovie on the Mac and also the iMovie app on the iPad.. He suggested utilizing Premier - which will hopefully be available to students in the upcoming month (fingers crossed!) He will be able to assist me in video editing and footage if we have a good time frame set out for him, etc.
This would be good so I can get better video footage, etc. Since I am no expert and shooting film... and he is. I'm excited to work with him and learn Premier as well. I spoke with Sr. Rosaria, she thinks that Premier is also a good option..

I decided The One Department, Many Voices Exhibit interactive video would be incredibly hard to accomplish if we wanted it to be done well. I would prefer to focus on the Senior Student Art Gallery & have it done exceptionally well then throw together something & hope it works.
I'm really trying to brainstorm ideas for these videos now.. also, I'm hoping to speak with the CC Art Gallery contact to get a better idea on what's new!

The BIG question

what is INTERACTIVE?

I am having an issue with this QR code idea, I like it.. but, I know people.. they need an incentive or a push to do something.. even something small. so taking the time to download a free app.. that will give access to an 'exclusive' look is great... in my opinion... but I'm unsure of how motivated others will feel.
possible answer - put QR code info / promo video link on Gallery Invite, and make a social media blast to get people excited/ prepared / ready.

second answer... find a motivator. create a motivator.. I was thinking of the way the hot spots in London had a QR code linked to a site that let individuals document their own experiences/ stories/ memories at a particular historic location in the city. possibly having a 'I was here' 'I saw this' 'this is what I liked' kind of thing? it could turn into a critique of somesort... hmm.. another possible answer.. have it make an effect on something..
